Aussie Rules Footy

Aussie Rules Footy is a videogame for the Nintendo Entertainment System developed by Beam Software. It was released on June the 1st, 1991, in Australia only.

'Out of bounds on the full'

The most enduring element of the game has proven to be the boundary umpire. More specifically the digitised sample that plays when the ball travels 'out of bounds on the full'. The ocker accent of the umpire made it a popular playground meme of the day, and the quote is still memorable to people of that generation, even those who are no longer interested in videogames.

The voice was provided by Gavan Anderson.

Teams

There are 18 teams included in the game. The Perth, Hobart, Darwin, and Canberra teams are fictional, though Perth is, assumingly, a misnamed West Coast.

Obviously the real guernsey designs are not able to be reproduced in-game. Beam, instead, allow the player to select from six colours. Five are standard across all teams, with one, more accurate, colour on the left. See figure right for North Melbourne's example.

Listed below are the teams, their colour, and their actual club colours:

  • Adelaide: maroon (real colours: navy, red, and gold)
  • Carlton: blue* (real colour: navy)
  • Essendon: brown (real colours: red, and black)
  • Footscray: blue* (real colours: blue, read, and white)
  • Hawthorn: gold (real colours: brown, and gold)
  • Perth: gold (real colours: blue, and gold)
  • St Kilda: maroon (real colours: red, black, and white)
  • Hobart: brown
  • Darwin: maroon
  • Brisbane: gold (real colours: maroon, and gold)
  • Collingwood: white (real colours: black, and white)
  • Fitzroy: maroon (real colours: blue, gold, and red)
  • Geelong: maroon (real colours: navy, and white)
  • Melbourne: brown (real colours: navy, and red)
  • Richmond: gold (real colours: black, and gold)
  • Sydney: white (real colours: red, and white)
  • Canberra: gold
  • Nth Melbourne: blue* (real colours: blue, and white)

* Note that this blue is slightly different than the one in the default palette. (see fig. right)

The Cover

cover.jpg

  • This image appears on both the front of the box, and the manual.
  • The two teams depicted are: Collingwood, in the black and white stripes; and West Coast, in gold and blue.
  • The players featured are, from left to right:
    1. Craig Kelly (no. 23);
    2. (in background; unidentifiable);
    3. Karl Langdon (no. 19);
    4. (on the ground; unidentifiable.);
    5. Peter Sumich (marking the ball).
  • I believe the image is taken from either the Qualifying Final played on 8/9/1990, or the Qualifying Final Replay played on 15/9/1990.
  • Interestingly the logos have been removed, including the AFL insignias. Perhaps due to a lateness in acquiring the AFL's approval, or due to the photo being from a previous year (ie: pre-1990), when the competition was known as the VFL (These two scenarios are speculation). There should be AFL logos on the left breast, and between the lines on the shorts. Sponsor's (in the Collingwood guernseys' cases: Spicers Paper) logos should be on the right breast. The fence has also been doctored.
