While there are a myriad of different models, the important ones are 20GB and 60GB are hardware based compatible with playstation 2 games. The early 80GB models have software based PS2 emulation. This results in a few graphical and sound errors, but supposedly has a 98% playability. If you want to upgrade your harddrive, it's an easy procedure. Be careful, the blue screw is very very easy to strip.

There have been literally dozens of hardware revisions over the years, but only three are worth mentioning: old model with parallel port; old model without the parallel port (SCPH-900x series); and the PS One (also without the parallel port). The parallel port was only used for old model hardware cheating / region free / burnt disc playing devices, and these generally work better than the later disc-based versions, but less-better than modchips. The PSOne also removed the r…

A slightly upgraded version of the Game Boy that came out a good nine years after the mono's release. As the name implies, it can do color graphics, and has an easier-to-see screen. Much of the Color's library consists of ports and remakes of NES/SNES games. Most Color games will play on older Game Boy models in monochrome, but there were some later Color-only titles.

Aside from PCs, the black and white Game Boy with its ghosting “spinach” screen was the most popular and successful gaming platform of all time. It maintained its market supremacy through a gauntlet of would-be competitors, such as the Game Gear, Lynx, and Neo Geo Pocket. The stripped-down nature of the hardware and its games, coupled with low development costs, meant that some real classics and neat curiosities were allowed to emerge that would have been rejected by their publishers as too simp…

Nintendo's awkward, misunderstood entry in the 32-bit wars, and the last major home console to take games on cartridges. Largely ignored in Japan, the N64 found its niche here as the system of choice among Mario-obsessed kids and FPS multiplayer-loving frat boys without a decent computer. Since you're reading a gaming wiki, you've probably at least played Mario 64 and Ocarina somewhere in your lifetime, if only emulated or at a friend's house.

Uses a smaller DVD disc in some vain attempt to prevent piracy, which just ended up making emulation the priority for people who didn't want to pay for things. Microsoft's successor to the Xbox. Due to faulty hardware, nearly all units made from 2006 to at least 2008 have experienced or will experience what is affectionately known as the “RRoD”, requiring servicing or possibly replacement. Save a couple of notable exceptions, the 360 is the console du jour at the moment. This is largely due to its excellent third-party support, key exclusive franchises, and role as a (generally shit) indie development platform.

Hacking all of them is relatively simple, and gives much better load times for most games. Home to the UMD format, which has set landfills and bargain bins on fire.
