Canine Errand

Escort Mission

As with most escort missions, the following games have the player safeguarding a helpless character throughout one or more danger-filled levels. However, instead of the usual damsel in distress, the otherwise defenseless character in these games happens to be a dog.

  • Earthworm Jim - In a level called For Pete's Sake!, the player must protect Peter Puppy from several hazards while escorting him across the stage.
  • Earthworm Jim 2 - In the level Puppy Love (which is divided into three parts), Peter Puppy's brothers and sisters are being thrown out the window of a tall building. The player rescues them by running back and forth with a giant marshmallow capable of bouncing the puppies safely to Peter.
  • Rocko's Modern Life - Spunky's Dangerous Day - Your mission throughout this game is to provide your dog (Spunky) a safe path from one end of each level to the other, which makes tending to the dog the mission of the entire game.

Puppy Retrieval

To combat the joylessness of the common fetch quest, a number of developers have thrown puppies into the mix. It is commonly implemented as a one-off, “Help! Find/Rescue my runaway/stolen puppies!” mission, with little variation.

  • Cave Story
  • Final Fantasy VI
  • Kingdom Hearts - 99 of these varmints at the rate of 3 per treasure chest amounts to 33 times you'll have to play fetch with these puppies to catch 'em all.
  • The Legend of Zelda - The Ocarina of Time
  • Okami
