The name 'Metroid', explained [[people:Yoshio Sakamoto]] in an episode of [[wp>Game Center CX]], was formed by combinting 'Metro' (as in: Metro / Subway / Tube --- underground train network) and 'oid' (to describe the robotic or androidish elements of [[character:samus|Samus]]' design.
